Hong Kong’s public hospitals are getting HK$500 million (US$64 million) in extra funding from the government as they struggle to cope with a deluge of winter flu cases amid a severe shortage of nursing staff.
Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor announced the major cash infusion on Tuesday, saying it was needed to ease the heavy burden on public hospitals where bed occupancy rates have gone through the roof and patients have spilled out of wards into corridors.
