Hong Kong’s health minister said it would take two weeks to determine whether mainland-imported hairy crabs contain any cancer-causing chemicals, but some say the process should be speeded up.
The Centre for Food Safety discovered that hairy crab samples from two farms in Jiangsu province contained excessive levels of dioxin and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls. Both are highly toxic chemical compounds that can cause cancer and damage the reproductive and immune systems.
